Cesare Bovo's Player Issued jersey: a relic from AS Roma's Scudetto-winning season

The second official AS Roma jersey for the 2001/2002 season in its Player Issued version is one of the rarest and most historically significant vintage pieces in Italian football collecting. The white kit with burgundy side inserts and visible grey stitching, designed by Kappa — featuring the INA Assitalia sponsor in the center, the AS Roma embroidered badge on the right side, and the Lega Calcio patch on the sleeve — tells the story of the most exciting season in the club's recent history: the one immediately following the conquest of Roma's third Scudetto, won in 2000/01 under the guidance of Fabio Capello. Certifying this unrepeatable historical moment is the Tricolore Scudetto with a gold border sewn on the left chest, proudly worn by Roma in the season they defended their title and made their historic first participation in the UEFA Champions League. The jersey, a long-sleeved XXL size, made in Italy with Kappa Kombat technical materials, features the name BOVO and the number 30 in burgundy on a white background on the back. Its condition reflects the over twenty years of history of this item, with the natural effects of time on the technical materials of the era — an element that reinforces its authenticity and vintage charm.

The player: Cesare Bovo

Cesare Bovo (Rome, January 14, 1983) is a Roman central defender who grew up in the Giallorossi youth academy, where he progressed through the ranks alongside his peer Daniele De Rossi. In the 2000/01 season — the one of Roma's third Scudetto — he was already called up to the first team by Fabio Capello, with two appearances on the bench. In the 2001/02 season, wearing number 30, he was part of the historic AS Roma squad, reigning Italian champions, who participated in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. After a loan spell at Lecce and a season at Parma, Bovo returned to Roma in 2005/06 and definitively established himself in Serie A with Palermo, Genoa, and Torino, becoming one of the most appreciated central defenders of his generation. In 2004, he was a European Under-21 champion and won a bronze medal at the Athens Olympics, crowning a career as a protagonist of Italian football in the 2000s. This jersey represents the earliest and rarest chapter of his history in Giallorosso: an authentic sports document of a player who would become one of the best defenders of his generation.

The Tricolore Scudetto: the symbol of the Italian Champions

The tricolor patch with a gold border sewn on the left chest is the detail that makes this jersey an unrepeatable piece of Giallorossi history. The Tricolore Scudetto is worn on the jersey in the season following the championship victory: Roma proudly wore it in 2001/02, the year they defended the title and made their debut in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. It is the tangible symbol of an unrepeatable moment — the Roma of Totti, Batistuta, Capello, Italian Champions — which makes every jersey from that season a document of football history of extraordinary value for any collector.

What is a vintage Player Issued jersey?

A vintage Player Issued jersey is a kit prepared specifically for a particular player, produced over twenty years ago, combining the technical characteristics of team supply with the historical and collectible value of time passed. It differs from the commercial version by its professional finishes, materials, and match-fit cut, exclusive technical details reserved for the squad. It is hierarchically superior to the store version and inferior only to the Match Worn. Vintage Player Issued jerseys from the 2000s — especially those produced Made in Italy with Kappa Kombat technical materials — are today among the most sought-after pieces by collectors worldwide for their rarity, construction quality, and historical value.
