Joe Dante (Morristown, November 28, 1946) is an American director, producer, and editor, among the most original authors of American fantasy cinema. Trained at Roger Corman's New World Pictures, he debuted in 1978 with Piranha, a cult horror film in the vein of Jaws, followed in 1981 by The Howling, an acclaimed werewolf film. His talent was noticed by Steven Spielberg, who wanted him to direct Gremlins (1984), the Christmas horror fairy tale that became his biggest success and an absolute classic of the genre. He directed films that entered the collective imagination such as Explorers (1985), Innerspace (1987), Oscar winner for special effects, and Gremlins 2 (1990).
