Anson Williams, stage name of Anson William Heimlich, was born in Los Angeles on September 25, 1949, nephew of Dr. Henry Heimlich, inventor of the famous life-saving maneuver. After his early theatrical appearances at Burbank High School, he debuted on television in 1972 in an episode of Love, American Style, which laid the groundwork for Happy Days. From 1974 to 1984, he played the character of Warren Potsie Weber, Richie Cunningham's friend, for the entire duration of the series, a role that earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In the series, he also played the role of a singer, recording the single "Deeply" in 1977, which entered the Hot 100 chart. After the end of Happy Days, Williams embarked on a prolific career as a television director, directing episodes of cult series such as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Xena: Warrior Princess, Beverly Hills 90210, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
