2006 Italy Home Shirt – Luca Toni – No. 9 – Player Issued – Puma – 2006 Germany World Cup

Luca Toni's 2006 World Cup Italy jersey: the kit of the fourth star

The first Italian national team jersey for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany is one of the most beloved kits in Azzurri history: the one in which Marcello Lippi's Italy won the world title in Berlin on July 9, 2006. Produced by Puma in blue technical fabric with a striped texture, it features navy blue inserts on the sides and shoulders, the golden Puma cat on the chest and sleeves, and the ITALIA crest with the FIGC logo and three stars, representing the period before the fourth title was won. The official FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 patch is applied to the right sleeve. The front features the golden number 9, while the back displays the tournament's official nameset with the name "toni" in gold lowercase letters and the large number 9.

The player: Luca Toni

Luca Toni (Pavullo nel Frignano, May 26, 1977) was one of the most prolific Italian strikers of his generation. After beginning his career with Modena, Empoli, Fiorenzuola, Lodigiani, Treviso, Vicenza, Brescia, and Palermo, he broke through at Fiorentina, where in 2005/06 he scored 31 goals in Serie A and won the European Golden Shoe, the first Italian ever to do so. In the 2006 World Cup, he was the Azzurri's starting number 9: in the quarter-finals against Ukraine, he scored a decisive brace and also started in the final, which Italy won on penalties against France. Later, he won the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal with Bayern Munich, subsequently playing for Roma and Juventus among others, and at the age of 38, he became the top scorer of the 2014/15 Serie A season with Hellas Verona.

What is a Player Issued jersey?

A Player Issued jersey is a kit specifically prepared for the team's supply, intended for the player but not necessarily worn in an official match. It is distinguished from the commercial version by precise technical characteristics: competition-grade cut and fabric, official competition patches, supply-grade namesets, and dedicated labels. This item carries the Puma article code 733663, different from the 733633 code of the jersey sold to fans, as well as the printed Puma label at the collar, size XXL, made in Thailand. It is hierarchically superior to the store version and inferior only to a Match Worn jersey. Linked to the 2006 World Cup victory and its number 9, it is a piece of extremely high value for any Azzurri collector.
