Matthew David Lewis was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, on June 27, 1989. He began acting as a child and at just 11 years old was chosen to play Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), a role he reprised in all eight films of the saga until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). For the character, initially clumsy and awkward, Lewis wore shoes two sizes too big, plastic tips on his ears, and fake teeth — scenic devices that physically transformed him until the surprising adult debut in the final chapter, where Neville becomes one of the heroes of the Battle of Hogwarts. After the saga concluded, he alternated between theater, television, and cinema: he acted in Bluestone 42 (2013-2015), in the HBO series Ripper Street (2014-2016), in BBC's Happy Valley (2016), in Me Before You (2016) alongside Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, and in the British dramas The Syndicate, All Creatures Great & Small (2020-2021) and Avoidance (2025). In 2025, he is the absolute protagonist of the Acorn TV series Murder Before Evensong, playing Canon Daniel Clement, based on Richard Coles's best-seller. In 2026, he is expected alongside Eleanor Tomlinson in the Channel 5 miniseries The Family Secret. On May 28, 2018, he married Angela Jones in Portofino.
