Mario Andretti

Mario Andretti

Mario Andretti is one of the greatest legends in world motorsport: 1978 F1 World Champion, winner of the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, and four IndyCar titles. Born in Istria in 1940 and immigrated to America in 1955, he is the only driver in history to have triumphed in the three most iconic races on the planet. At 86, he is still a leading figure: in 2026, he will join the Cadillac Formula 1 Team as a board member.

Career

Mario Gabriele Andretti was born on February 28, 1940, in Montona d'Istria, then Italian territory and now part of Croatia, the twin brother of Aldo Andretti. After the post-war years in Istria, in 1955 the family emigrated to the United States, settling in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where Mario obtained American citizenship in 1964. He debuted in racing in the midget and sprint car categories in the late 1950s, reaching the pinnacle of American motorsport with the USAC National Championship title in 1965 at just 25 years old.

He achieved his first Formula 1 victory at the 1971 South African Grand Prix with the Ferrari 312B, before joining Colin Chapman's Lotus, where his championship career reached its peak: with the revolutionary ground-effect Lotus 79, he became Formula 1 World Champion in 1978, dominating the season with 6 victories, including the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, his last F1 victory and still the last victory by an American driver in the history of the championship. In parallel, he dominated IndyCar, winning four national titles (1965, 1966, 1969, 1984) and triumphing at the Indianapolis 500 in 1969 in a Hawk-Ford. Seven years earlier, in 1967, he had already won the Daytona 500 in the NASCAR Grand National Series, an achievement that still makes him the only driver in history to have won Formula 1, the Indianapolis 500, and the Daytona 500. He completed his palmarès with the 12 Hours of Sebring (1967, 1970, 1972), the 1000 km of Monza (1974), and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (1969).

He retired from racing at the end of 1994 after over 100 victories in five decades of his career, demonstrating unprecedented versatility: he is one of only three drivers in the world to have won races in Formula 1, IndyCar, the World Sportscar Championship, and NASCAR. In 2000, he was named Driver of the Century by the Associated Press and RACER Magazine. In November 2024, General Motors announced his entry as a board member of the new Cadillac Formula 1 Team, which will debut in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship as the eleventh team on the grid, bringing the Andretti name back to the center of the paddock almost fifty years after his world title.

Why collect a Mario Andretti autograph

Mario Andretti's autographs represent one of the most solid and diverse segments of global motorsport collecting. His signature not only identifies a Formula 1 World Champion but also the only driver in history capable of achieving the absolute trinity of motor racing: an F1 world title, the Indianapolis 500, and the Daytona 500. This record, unbeaten for over fifty years, places Andretti in a statistical category all his own, where European Formula 1 enthusiasts, American IndyCar collectors, NASCAR fans, and endurance racing connoisseurs coexist.

The return of the Andretti name to Formula 1 in 2026 with Cadillac has reignited international attention on the driver and his achievements, leading to a realignment of market values for vintage autographed memorabilia, particularly those related to the Lotus years 1977-1980, the Ferrari 312s, and the Hawk-Fords of the 1969 Indy 500. Owning an authentic Mario Andretti autograph means safeguarding the signature of a figure who unites the Italian-American dream, the legend of American motorsport, and the dynastic continuity of one of the most iconic families in world racing, along with his son Michael Andretti and grandson Marco Andretti.
