Career
Grant Henry Hill was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 5, 1972, into a family with high-level sports DNA: his father Calvin was an NFL running back for twelve seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Washington, and Cleveland, while his mother Janet graduated from Wellesley College alongside Hillary Clinton. Raised in Virginia after his family moved there, Hill emerged from Episcopal High School as one of the most complete talents in American basketball, attracting the attention of all major universities. He chose Duke and legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, where between 1990 and 1994, he won two consecutive NCAA titles (1991, 1992), was named ACC Player of the Year in 1994, and became a two-time All-American. His number 33 jersey was retired by the Blue Devils, the first of his generation to receive this honor.
In 1994, he was chosen third overall by the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Draft, immediately winning the Rookie of the Year award and becoming one of the league's most recognizable faces within a few years: seven All-Star selections between 1995 and 2005, five All-NBA selections, and in 1996 he participated in Dream Team II, which won the Olympic gold medal in Atlanta. Alongside the Pistons, Orlando Magic, and Phoenix Suns, he played a total of nineteen seasons in the NBA, accumulating 17,137 total points, but a series of severe right ankle injuries starting in 2000—culminating in five surgeries—heavily affected his career, preventing him from fully expressing a talent that many considered comparable to Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. He retired in 2013 from the Los Angeles Clippers at 41, with the unanimous respect of the basketball community, and in 2018, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
After retiring, Hill built a second career at the top of global sports: he became a television analyst for TNT and CBS, is co-owner of the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, Orlando City SC in MLS, the Baltimore Orioles in MLB, and the Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League. In 2021, USA Basketball appointed him managing director of the men's Team USA, succeeding Jerry Colangelo: his Olympic debut in the role was the triumph at the Paris 2024 Games, where the team led by LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard recaptured the Olympic gold medal by beating France in the final. An active philanthropist through the Grant Hill Foundation, he is also one of the world's most important private collectors of African American art and published his autobiography "Game" in 2022.
Why collect a Grant Hill autograph
Grant Hill is one of the most respected figures in the recent history of international basketball: Olympic champion, Hall of Famer, seven-time All-Star, and now the architect of Team USA's resurgence after the disappointment of the bronze medal at Athens 2004. His signature represents a piece of sports history that spans multiple eras—from the college basketball golden age of the early 90s at Duke, to the NBA of the Michael Jordan era, up to his executive role which brought him back into the international spotlight with the gold medal at Paris 2024.
For Italian collectors of NBA basketball, original Grant Hill autographs represent a growing value investment, supported by his recent induction into the Hall of Fame, his renewed media prominence as an executive for USA Basketball, and the rarity of signed material available on the European market. Autographed photos from his Pistons years, 90s NBA cards, and memorabilia related to the Olympic period are items destined to appreciate over time.
