Career
Giuseppe Tornatore made his directorial debut in 1986 with 'Il camorrista', based on the novel by Giuseppe Marrazzo. World acclaim came in 1988 with 'Cinema Paradiso', a poignant tribute to popular cinema and Sicilian childhood, which won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990.
In subsequent years, he directed a series of unforgettable works: 'Everybody's Fine' (1990) with Marcello Mastroianni, 'A Pure Formality' (1994) with Roman Polański and Gérard Depardieu, 'The Star Maker' (1995), 'The Legend of 1900' (1998) with Tim Roth, 'Malèna' (2000) with Monica Bellucci, 'The Unknown Woman' (2006), 'Baarìa' (2009) set in his hometown Bagheria, 'The Best Offer' (2013) and 'Correspondence' (2016).
His cinema is characterized by a deep nostalgia for the past, attention to detail and the memorable musical collaboration with Ennio Morricone, which lasted until the Maestro's passing in 2020. His accolades include an Oscar, a Golden Globe, two BAFTAs, and eleven David di Donatello awards.
