Giancarlo Giannini was born in La Spezia on August 1, 1942, and grew up in Naples, where he developed a passion for theater. He graduated from the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome in 1964 and began his theatrical career with Franco Zeffirelli in productions of Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream. He made his cinematic debut in 1965 and formed a decisive artistic partnership with director Lina Wertmüller, with whom he created his most iconic roles: The Seduction of Mimi (1972), Love and Anarchy (1973, which earned him the Best Actor Award at Cannes), Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August (1974) with Mariangela Melato, and especially Seven Beauties (1976), which brought him a historic Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In his long career, he has worked with Luchino Visconti in L'innocente (1976), Mario Monicelli, Dino Risi, Ettore Scola, and Elio Petri. Internationally, he appeared in The Secret of Santa Vittoria by Stanley Kramer (1969), New York Stories by Francis Ford Coppola (1989), Hannibal by Ridley Scott (2001), Man on Fire (2004), and the two James Bond films Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008). As a voice actor, he is the official Italian voice of Al Pacino in most of his performances, and has also dubbed Jack Nicholson (The Shining, Batman), Michael Douglas, and Dustin Hoffman. He has received four David di Donatello awards for Best Actor (1972, 1984, 1996, 2002). On March 7, 2023, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the first Italian actor since the 1960s. On June 24, 2026, he received the Special Award at the Nastri d'Argento for his narration in Giulio Base's The Gospel of Judas. At 84, he remains extremely active in cinema, voice acting, and international projects.
