Dejan Savićević

Dejan Savićević (Podgorica, September 15, 1966) is the greatest Montenegrin footballer of all time and a legend of Capello's Milan. The genius of the lob in the 1994 Champions League final against Barcelona, winner of 3 Scudetti with the Rossoneri and the 1991 European Cup with Red Star. 46 appearances for Yugoslavia.

Career

Dejan Savićević was born in Titograd, now Podgorica in Montenegro, on September 15, 1966. An attacking midfielder endowed with extraordinary technical class, vision of the game, and unpredictable flair, he is universally recognized as the greatest footballer in Montenegrin history and one of the most iconic figures in Yugoslav and European football of the 1990s. Nicknamed "Il Genio" (The Genius) for his ability to invent impossible plays, he began his career at Buducnost Podgorica before moving to Red Star Belgrade in 1988, where he experienced one of the most memorable seasons in European football: the 1990-91 European Cup won against Marseille on penalties in Bari, a triumph that cemented Red Star as the golden team of that era. In 1992, he joined Fabio Capello's AC Milan — the post-Sacchi phase of the great Rossoneri dominance — where he built his footballing identity in Italy, winning three Serie A titles (1992-93, 1993-94, 1995-96), one Coppa Italia, three Italian Supercups, and above all, the historic 1993-94 UEFA Champions League, won in the legendary Athens final against Cruyff's Barcelona. In that match, Savićević wrote the most famous page of his career with a chip shot from about thirty meters that went over goalkeeper Zubizarreta, a goal considered among the most beautiful in the history of Champions League finals and an eternal symbol of his technical genius. With the Yugoslav national team, he participated in two World Cups (1990 and 1998), collecting 46 caps and 4 goals. He ended his career at Rapid Vienna in 2001. Since 2001, he has served as the technical commissioner of Montenegro, and since 2012, he has held the position of president of the Montenegrin Football Association, confirming his central role in the football of his native country.
