Carlo Verdone debuted in 1980 with Un sacco bello, written, directed, and starring him, produced by Sergio Leone. The following year came Bianco, rosso e Verdone (1981), which confirmed his talent for bringing a gallery of popular characters to life. In the 1980s, he solidified his career with films that became classics of Italian comedy: Borotalco (1982), Acqua e sapone (1983), I due carabinieri (1984), Troppo forte (1986), and Compagni di scuola (1988).
In the 1990s and 2000s, he alternated between ensemble comedies and more introspective portraits with Maledetto il giorno che t'ho incontrato (1992), Viaggi di nozze (1995), Sono pazzo di Iris Blond (1996), Gallo cedrone (1998), and Manuale d'amore (2005). Among his most recent titles are Io, loro e Lara (2009), Posti in piedi in paradiso (2012), and Si vive una volta sola (2020). Since 2021, he has starred in the Prime Video series Vita da Carlo, which he also directs and writes. He has won seven David di Donatello awards and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2023.
