Career
Arrigo Sacchi was born in Fusignano on April 1, 1946. Having never played at a professional level, he began his coaching career in the Romagnol amateur leagues before making a name for himself with Cesena's youth sector and the lower divisions of Rimini and Parma. In the summer of 1987, Silvio Berlusconi called him to manage AC Milan, a choice then considered daring: in four seasons, Sacchi built what would become known as the Immortals, winning one Scudetto (1987-88), one Supercoppa Italiana, two consecutive European Cups (1988-89 and 1989-90), two UEFA Super Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. He revolutionized world football by introducing full-field pressing, zonal marking, and departmental play, influencing subsequent generations of coaches such as Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp. The 5-0 victory over Real Madrid at the San Siro in the 1989 European Cup semi-final remains historic, considered one of the best collective performances of all time. From 1991 to 1996, he was the coach of the Italian National team, leading the Azzurri to the 1994 USA World Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Brazil at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. In 2007, The Times named him the greatest Italian coach of all time, in 2011 he was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame, and in 2022, he received the UEFA President's Award.
