Career
Andrea Barzagli was born in Fiesole, in the province of Florence, on May 8, 1981. A central defender of great tactical solidity, intelligent game reading, and a quiet but decisive temperament, he built one of the most emblematic careers in modern Italian football, starting from lower divisions and reaching world-class levels. He began his career at Rondinella Impruneta, winning the 1998-99 National Amateur Championship, before moving to Pistoiese, Piacenza, Ascoli (where he won Serie C1 in 2001-02), and Chievo. He rose to prominence at Palermo between 2004 and 2008, seasons in which he established himself as one of Serie A's best defenders. In 2008, he moved to Wolfsburg in Germany, where he won the Bundesliga in his first season, 2008-09. In January 2011, he joined Juventus, beginning the brightest chapter of his career: alongside Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, he formed the legendary BBC, a defensive trio considered among the strongest in Italian football history. With the Bianconeri, he won eight consecutive Scudetti from the 2011-12 to the 2018-19 season, four consecutive Coppa Italia titles from 2014-15 to 2017-18, four Italian Supercups, and played in two UEFA Champions League finals (2014-15 and 2016-17). With the Italian national team, he earned 73 caps between 2004 and 2017, participating in two World Cups (2006 and 2014), three European Championships (2008, 2012, and 2016), the 2013 Confederations Cup, and the 2004 Olympics, where he won a bronze medal. His highest point came at Germany 2006: Barzagli was part of the World Cup-winning squad led by Marcello Lippi, becoming a World Champion at twenty-five. A finalist at Euro 2012 and third in the 2013 Confederations Cup, he concluded his playing career in May 2019 with Juventus, later taking on the role of assistant coach for the Italian national team. Awarded the Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, he is among the few Italian footballers to boast nine national titles combined between the Bundesliga and Serie A.
