Career
Alessandro Altobelli was born in Sonnino on November 28, 1955. Nicknamed "Spillo" (Needle) for his slender build, he was one of the most prolific and iconic Italian strikers between the late 1970s and 1980s. After starting his career at Latina in Serie C and three seasons at Brescia in Serie B, in 1977 he joined Internazionale where he would remain for eleven consecutive seasons, becoming one of the symbols of the Nerazzurri club. With Inter, he won the 1979-80 Scudetto and two Coppa Italia titles (1977-78 and 1981-82), scoring a total of 209 goals in 466 appearances. He is still the all-time leading scorer in the Coppa Italia with 56 goals in 93 appearances, and is the ninth-best Italian goalscorer in all competitions with almost 300 career goals. With the Italian national team, he won the 1982 World Cup in Spain: coming on as a substitute for Francesco Graziani in the Bernabéu final against West Germany, he scored the third goal for the definitive 3-1 on July 11, 1982, concluding one of the most memorable nights in Azzurri history. He ended his career with a season at Juventus (1988-89) and a return to Brescia in Serie B (1989-90). In total, he made 61 appearances and scored 25 goals for the national team between 1980 and 1988.
