Michael Anthony Powell (Philadelphia, November 10, 1963), nicknamed the "Philadelphia Phantom," has been the world record holder in the long jump since 1991. On August 30 of that year, at the World Championships in Tokyo, he achieved the feat that cemented his legend: 8.95 meters, erasing Bob Beamon's historic 8.90 that had stood for twenty-three years, following an epic duel with rival Carl Lewis. It is a record that still stands today, the longest-standing in athletics. Powell won two world titles, in Tokyo 1991 and Stuttgart 1993, an international bronze in Gothenburg 1995, and two Olympic silver medals, in Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992, both times behind Carl Lewis. After retiring, he dedicated himself to teaching athletics as a coach and motivator.
