Giuseppe Tornatore (Bagheria, May 27, 1956) is one of the greatest and most awarded contemporary Italian directors. Raised in Sicily, he made his cinematic debut in 1986 with Il Camorrista, but it was with Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988) that he achieved international fame, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1989 and the Grand Prix Special du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. His filmography includes masterpieces such as L'Uomo delle Stelle (1995), La Leggenda del Pianista sull'Oceano (1998) with Ennio Morricone's historic soundtrack, Malèna (2000), La Sconosciuta (2006), Baarìa (2009) — an autobiographical film that opened the 66th Venice Film Festival — and La Migliore Offerta (2013). In his career, he has won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, two BAFTAs, and eleven David di Donatello awards. In 2021, he directed the documentary Ennio, a tribute to his longtime collaborator Ennio Morricone.
