The Champion: Gianfranco Zola

Gianfranco Zola (Oliena, July 5, 1966) is one of the greatest attacking talents in the history of Italian football, nicknamed 'Magic Zola' for his extraordinary technical class. Coming up through the youth ranks of Nuorese, he arrived at Napoli in 1989 where he had the privilege of playing alongside Diego Armando Maradona in the last two seasons of Maradona's time in blue, learning directly from the greatest of all time. In the 1990/1991 season, depicted in this photograph, Zola was part of the team defending the recently won Scudetto. His consecration came at Parma between 1993 and 1996, where he won the 1994-95 UEFA Cup and the 1993 European Supercup. In 1996 he joined Chelsea, becoming an absolute legend there: with the Blues, he won two FA Cups, one Cup Winners' Cup, and one UEFA Super Cup, as well as being voted Chelsea's best player ever by the fans. With the Italian National team, he made 35 appearances and scored 10 goals, participating in Euro 1996 and the 1994 USA World Cup. He ended his career with three seasons at Cagliari between 2003 and 2005, bringing the colors of his island back to Sardinia.
