Growing up in Ascoli's youth academy, he established himself in professional football with Gian Piero Gasperini's Genoa, where he met Ivan Juric — future Verona coach — becoming one of Italy's most appreciated defenders. Selected by Marcello Lippi for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he boasts 6 appearances for the senior national team. Moving to Russia in 2010, he won a championship with Spartak Moscow in 2017 and boasts over 180 appearances in the Russian Premier Liga. In July 2019, he returned to Italy to Hellas Verona, signing a two-year contract: the 2019/2020 season saw him make 5 appearances in Serie A during the historic Scaliger run led by Juric.
