Having grown up at Partizan Belgrade, he won two championships and one Serbia and Montenegro Cup, becoming the league's top scorer in 1994 and 1995. In the summer of 1995, he moved to Aston Villa for £3.5 million, a record sum for the club at the time, becoming the first Serb to wear the Villans' shirt. With the Villans, he played three good seasons, totaling 91 appearances and 29 goals, and in the 1995/96 season, he won the English League Cup, scoring in the final against Leeds United in the 3-0 victory at Wembley. He later played for Real Zaragoza, Parma, Espanyol, Celta Vigo, and Rubin Kazan, winning the top scorer award at Euro 2000 with the Yugoslav national team. With the Serbian national team, he made 102 appearances and scored 37 goals, holding the absolute record for a long time.
